Suan Mokkh Garden of Liberation, Bangkok

10 Nov 2018

After our shopping spree in Chatuchak Market, we went to Suan Mokkh. Nat said we could actually walk there through two huge parks, but it would have taken more than 30 min and we didn't want to do that under the hot sun. So we took a taxi. The fare was around 50 baht and we reached in less than 10 min.

The entrance area was still under renovation but once we got passed the drilling and hammering, we entered into a whole different atmosphere. On the ground level, there was a monk giving Dharma teaching to a group of attentive devotees.

We went up to the second level and a huge painting caught my eye...

"The eye of wisdom being passed on." It was interesting to see such a metaphysical style of painting in a temple of the Pali tradition.

Nat told me that Ven. Buddhadasa, the founder of the original temple in South Thailand was a very open-minded and progressive monk. He encouraged understanding and harmony among all religions, and was considered as a radical by some staunch Buddhists of the Pali tradition.

With this in mind, it was no surprise to see other elements of even the Vajrayana tradition around the temple...

Twelve Links of Interdependence.

Probably the chubbiest and cutest Milarepa that I've ever seen, and the nine stages of meditation (with a flying monk) 😄

Meditation Hall

Veranda overlooking a small lake.

Definitely hope to come back again after the renovation is done, and perhaps even visit the original temple in South Thailand.
