Hiking at Bukit Kangkar Pulai

After a long pause of 3.5 years, I felt the urge to go hiking again. As I've been warned that it's not safe to hike alone in Malaysia, I contacted my cousin who hikes weekly with his family. He recommended Bukit Kangkar Pulai 佛莱山.

The hill is located in Pulai where I seldom visit. Following the navigation app, I was led to a blocked road under construction. After some turns and a phone call with my cousin, I finally found the entrance!

My cousin shared with me the three most important rules when hiking:

(1) Don't take anything from the wild (everything in the wild belongs to the spirits).

(2) Don't say each other's name (so that the spirits cannot track us).

(3) Don't curse and speak nonsense (so that the spirits are not offended).

As I tried to focus on the treks, I didn't take many photos. Here are a few when the trails were more manageable.

2.0 Rest Stop

We only stopped by The Creek Village and 2.0 Rest Stop. The other two rest stops are called 1.0 and Xiao Yao Gu 逍遥谷. I was truly amazed by how well-maintained the rest stops are. There are clean cooking utensils, fire woods and water for washing. These are all prepared by a voluntary group called Happy Hiking 爬山乐. The volunteers actually carry buckets of water up the hill for strangers to use at these rest stops.

In their hearts, any hiker is a friend. This is evident when we meet other hikers along the trail. Everyone would just genuinely smile and greet each other with sparkles in their eyes. Most hikers don't even know each other's names. Yet they would chitchat like old neighbors.

In the forest, no one cares about status or fame. No competition, no separation. Everyone is connected by the same love for hiking.

As my cousin said, "Once you enter the forest, everything is different from the outside world."

Indeed 😀
